Anthropic and OpenEvidence bring free medical AI to doctors in 100 countries
Anthropic is teaming up with OpenEvidence to bring free AI-powered clinical decision support to doctors in roughly 100 countries that lack access to the technology. The collaboration, announced Tuesday, September 22, offers healthcare providers in low- and middle-income countries a specialized version of OpenEvidence’s medical search platform at no cost, the companies told Reuters.
OpenEvidence answers physicians’ questions by drawing on peer-reviewed medical research and treatment guidelines — and it’s already free to clinicians in the United States and Europe, where U.S. doctors consulted it 42 million times in August alone, founder Daniel Nadler told Reuters. The new rollout covers countries including Angola, Haiti, Mongolia, Sudan, and Uganda, where limited access to medical literature, specialist expertise, and continuing education can impair patient care. “Access to medical knowledge shouldn’t depend on geography,” Nadler said.
The move follows Anthropic’s push deeper into biology — Reuters reported last week that the company built a lab to do physical biology work aimed at drug development. Financial terms of the OpenEvidence collaboration were not disclosed, and critics caution that systems trained mostly on high-income-country data may not match local practice conditions.
