The new personal AI agents you can actually use right now
If you want an AI that does things for you — not just answers questions — four names matter right now: Meta's Muse, Instinct, xAI's Grok Bot, and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra. The shared pitch: give it goals, not prompts, and it keeps working after you put your phone down.
Meta's Muse is the easiest to try today: launched September 8, 2026, free to start, and available in a standalone app, at muse.ai, and inside WhatsApp It runs on its own dedicated cloud VM with a built-in browser you can watch, and Meta says it never sees your real passwords and asks approval before sensitive actions like purchases. Power costs $20/month, Maximum $100/month; U.S.-only, 18+. Instinct takes the opposite approach — no app at all. You text or call it inside iMessage or WhatsApp and it handles travel, groceries, calendar, and email. It's invite-only and free while in beta, already straining capacity with 100,000+ users, and it just raised a $250M Series B co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark at a $2.5B valuation.
xAI's Grok Bot, in early beta since August 11, 2026, is a team of named bots sharing one persistent cloud computer per account — they sign into apps directly, keep working when your laptop closes, and can collaborate in group chats. The catch: it's limited to paid tiers (SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra at $200/month, Cursor Teams Premium). GPT-6 Astra is the engine rather than the product: OpenAI's flagship computer-use model with 1.05M-token context, support for computer use, skills, and MCP, rolling out across paid ChatGPT tiers, the API, Azure, and AWS Bedrock. Heads up: Instinct has had documented overbooking incidents, and Grok Bot's broad credential access drew security scrutiny — the agent that can update your CRM can also delete it.
Why it matters
This is the shift from chatbots to agents that act on your behalf — booking, buying, signing in, and working while you're away. Knowing which ones you can actually touch today (Muse free, Instinct by invite) versus which live behind paid tiers (Grok Bot, GPT-6 Astra) is the difference between reading about the agent era and using it.
